Break tanks for a safe water supply
Break tanks prevent the backflow of contaminated water into the potable water supply. They are used to make sure there is the right amount of water in the system while acting as a barrier to prevent cross-contamination. Break tanks are commonly used across the following industries:
Â
-
Catering and hospitality
-
Healthcare
-
Correctional
-
Industrial facilities
What is a break tank?
A break tank is a pressureless, closed water storage tank designed to prevent contaminated or dirty water from flowing back into and polluting the mains water supply. By creating a physical separation, or âbreakâ, between the incoming mains supply and the water in use, it acts as a backflow prevention measure.
Break tanks are typically installed near a pump and paired with a boosting system to maintain adequate pressure and flow, especially in situations where the mains supply is insufficient.
How does a break tank work?
A break tank works by separating clean water from potentially contaminated water and stopping dirty water from flowing back into the system. Clean water enters a separate tank or chamber, where it is stored safely andn air gap between the inlet and outlet prevents dirty water from re-entering the main supply. If water does back up, it escapes through an overflow or air outlet instead of contaminating the system.
